project Summary:

The RIDC New Kensington project is one of the biggest revitalization initiatives the area has seen in recent years.  The building was once home to the Alcoa New Kensington plant that produced the first ever aluminum baseball bat, and now the tenants include, Affical, APA Trucking, and RE-Build Manufacturing.

Electrically we established a new 300amp 25KV service from West Penn Power, set a new 25KV outdoor GIS switchgear lineup to feed indoor 25KV to 480V substations, and installed a 250v DC rectifier for massive existing overhead cranes.  The expansive 175,000 square foot warehouse with 35 foot tall ceilings was built to fit the needs of  its tenant RE-Build Manufacturing, which occupies the entire space consisting of manufacturing and office space. The fit out included all new LED lighting, multiple 800 amp 480v bus duct runs, numerous panelboards and general purpose power throughout.

GREATEST CHALLENGES/REQUIREMENTS:

  • 25KV was brought to the property line requiring a new pole/air switch/fuse block to be installed
  • Due to lead time issues the outdoor GIS 25KV switchgear was custom built by JST and installed within a weathertight enclosure which was then placed by crane on site.
  • Won award for PEDA Economic Development Award
